About Jay

Jay Stephen Gilmore, a middle-aged man with short, wavy brown hair and blue eyes is looking directly at the camera and smiling. He is wearing rectangular black-framed glasses and a black shirt. The background appears to be a plain white wall.

I am a Canadian (settler), father, husband, feminist, LGBTQ++ ally, herbal tea-lover. Really, I am far more than I can list on this page. I am driven by curiosity to learn and grow.

I am interested in a wide variety of subjects and areas including—but hardly limited to: building communities, product development, user experience, marketing, content, design creativity and learning. The common theme is people and helping people do and find the things they need.

I am currently spinning plates and helping people at MODX, the creator and producer of the open source Content Management System.

Pet Projects

I'm a huge fan of remote work, flexible work, working from home—especially if the majority of that work is done through screens. As such, I have a pet project that showcases all sorts of resources for Remote Work, Distrubuted Teams, Remote Management, Flex-work and more. That project is called At Work Apart. If you've been around the web and web design space for a time, the name takes inspiration from the web design site, A List Apart.

Past Lives

I formerly operated a small web development and marketing firm (SmashingRed Web & Marketing) delivering solutions and strategies to owner managed business. I've worked as and taught location sound recording for film and television. I have worked in offices and in retail as well as snipping manager of a dental lab. One summer, while in high school, I worked on a crew that cut down trees around power lines.

As we all are, I am more than the brief paragraphs above. I dare you to learn more. In fact, why don't we have a conversation?
